A new documentary will look at 90s South African Hip-Hop group Brasse Vannie Kaap’s journey and contribution to the game. The Cape Town group, which consisted of DJ Ready, D Garlic Brown, Mr Fat, DJ Hamma, and DJ E20, is credited with bringing Afrikaaps (Cape Flats slang) into South African Hip-Hop, paving the way for more vernac rappers.
BVK has been referenced and immortalised by several rappers, most notably AKA on the songs ‘Touch My Blood’ (“Brasse Vannie Kaap, we not from Mondeor”) and ‘Mains Ous’ where he rapped, “BVK serving you the pille en die dagga.”
The documentary’s trailer shows archive footage of the crew rocking stages intercut with new interviews from the likes of DJ Ready D, DJ Azuhl, Vouks, Emile YX?, Lance Stehr and several other notable names in the Hip-Hop and Afrikaans music scenes.
The documentary starts streaming on Showmax on Monday, 7 October.
