Google has announced their 2023 Year In Search Trend for South Africa, revealing the most popular global and local searches.
Google data shows that South Africans have a heightened interest in celebrities, sporting events, special observed days, notable recently-deceased personalities and technology.
Among the 10 most searched people in South Africa are Nadia Nakai, Tyla and Sim Dope and among the 10 most searched lost personalities or events is AKA and Costa Titch.
Nadia has been on the grind for years and has had many business ventures and dropped some fire singles this year, but her association with the late Supa Mega has increased people’s curiosity about her.
Sim Dope’s speech at AKA’s memorial service in February put a face to the name of AKA’s 2014 single from his ‘Levels’ album. Sim Dope, whose opulence AKA rapped about in the song, shared some memories of him and AKA growing up and going to the same school.
Tyla has been dominating the globe with her ‘Popiano’ sound as her single ‘Water’ blew up and saw her achieving astronomic numbers on streaming platforms and becoming the country’s biggest musical and cultural exports this year.
