The first time I came across Nipho Hurd's music was on SiBi's YVNG & FREE playlist. The song in question was titled 'Money' and it was a smooth laid back R&B jam and her soothing vocals were just floating on top of the track. I did my due diligence on her and I found that she had released an EP titled 'The Ghel' and I enjoyed how soulfully ambient it sounded. You should definitely check that out before you dive into '24'.
I had to talk about her previous because it spills over into '24'. On 'The Ghel', she was soft and gentle about her feelings but she sits on the complete opposite end of the spectrum on '24'. While observing the rollout of this EP, I was like 'well, I don't think she's coming with the same vibes anymore:)' and my guess was right. The EP has a more aggressive and 'in your face' feel in both its sonics and subject matter. It all ties together really well with the imagery of the EP too. The EP is about her embracing herself unapologetically and that can be felt on the chorus of '24 Karat' when she sings " Ngifuna 24 Karat
Ngifun' i-fancy ball
Ngifun' i-Fendi bag
Ne Kangol hat
And its okay if aw'ngifuni boy
I'ma buy my own toys
Get it get it boy"
She continues with more of the same on '24 Hours', which feels like an up-tempo part 2 of '24 Karats'. '24' goes to show that a lot can be accomplished just with the packaging of a project. I feel like I understand exactly what she was trying to get across with this EP and I love how deliberate she was everything to do with '24'. Stream it below.
