First Impression of @itsmesipho's 'Lotuk' Album

By @Lesiba on 10/29/2021 in Projects You Should Hear

I don't think I've followed any one artists' rollout like I did Lotuk and I was curious to see how the songs were going to come together as a complete album. I knew I enjoyed the singles he released, but what was Lotuk actually about? The only thing I knew about this album is that it had a consistently dark and grungy sound. Sipho The Gift is an artist that knows he is underrated and this album feels like the tipping point. He's at the point where is happy being underrated. He is happy with himself and the journey he has to travel to get to this point. He doesn't care about the recognition or hype that comes with being a commercial artist. I think accepting that he is an 'underground king' has given him a level of freedom. I say this because Sipho The Gift didn't try to appeal to a wider audience on Lotuk. This isn't the type of album with something for everyone. This is an unapologetic rap album that has no fillers and a song like 'Represent', is deep within the traditional rap pocket. Overall, Lotuk is exactly what Sipho The Gift said it is. It's the 'Legend of the Underground King'. Stream it below.
