@theofficialidea Has Something To Say On 'A piece of my heart'

By @Lesiba on 08/19/2021 in Projects You Should Hear

Cape Town based artist, IDEA has gone through a sonic transformation with his latest offering 'A piece of my heart'. The EP is as honest as it comes and it's clear that IDEA has a high level of maturity for someone his age. The EP opens with 'All We've Ever Known' which is an unapologetic old school Hip Hop jam. The song touches on how one is really just a product of their environment. Personally, I resonate with this sentiment because where and who you grow up around has a large impact on your worldview. His social commentary continues on 'Understand Us' where he touches on the overall state of consumerism and superficial ideals. The song is a reminder that, especially as young people, we forget the human aspect of humanity in our pursuit of vanity.

The song 'Life' acts as an interlude, both in its content and sonic structure. The song sees him take a more introspective viewpoint with him harmonising "life is what you make of it, I take it with a grain of salt, you take it like a little b*tch". I love how he mentions he is spending more time alone so that he can live more. Often times you need to be alone to realise who you are, as a person, without the noise and clutter that comes with life.

The features of Rory September and Bipolarr were perfect for the song 'Ties' as they provide a breather from the raps and offer the listener a moment on the EP to just vibe. On the closing song of the EP, IDEA comes full circle and ends the EP the same way he started it, with an unapologetically old school feel but this time with a heavy jazz influence.
