@Kuchicola Bares It All On 'Clown's Tears'

By @Lesiba on 08/03/2021 in Projects You Should Hear

I've been listening to KuchiCola since 2019 when she released her self titled EP, so you can imagine how happy I am to be able to write about her music today. She recently released an album titled 'Clown's Tears'. There a quite a few things that impress me about this album, so I didn't really know where to start. So I figured her production is the best place because as she said "Round here we sing on beats we made". The album is mostly self-produced with an exception of a couple of songs that boast production credits from her equally as talented little brother, C C G. The album has deep moments of sadness like on Cry Baby Cry, where she is really vulnerable and the stripped-down production matches the content of the song. On the other end of the spectrum, 'Clown's Tears' has songs like 'Eish' that are bass-heavy with an assortment of other elements that can take you into a completely different world.

Make no mistake, Kuchocola has an amazing ear for production and no wonder she has production credits on Joda Kgosi's Sour Milk EP, but I don't think that is her 'X factor' as an artist. If I was asked the question, what makes Kuchicola different from other artists?  I would answer, her songwriting. Kuchicola holds nothing back in her lyrics, to the point where you could even feel like maybe she could hold back a little. If you listen to the beginning of 'Never Us, Just You', you'll know what I mean. In all seriousness, her lyrics sound like you're reading her personal diary with some background music.  Her lyrics are so piercing that by the end of 'Clown's Tears' you feel like Kuchicola is more like a sister who is venting to you, than an artist whose album you're just listening to. I had the pleasure of talking to Kuchicola herself and got to get a deeper understanding of 'Clown's Tears'. The album is a story of heartbreak. On one side she is in disbelief that someone could do her so wrong but, at the same time she feels a bit naive for thinking that she could trust the intentions of some of the people she has come across. So at the end of Clown's Tears, what's Kuchicola's stance on love? The answer can be found on the last song titled 'BTW, IWWMT', which stands for 'By The Way I Won't Waste My Time'. Kuchicola is still open to love despite all that's happened to her. She just doesn't have the patience for anyone who wants to waste her time. Stream Clown's Tears below.
