After a prolonged absence from music, Mashayabhuqe KaMamba is back on the scene with his debut album, Starmars (6 Years Later). The album bears no listed features without a single track that clocks three minutes. The album is a complete shift away from what listeners understood as his brand of “digital maskandi.” This album’s production is far more electronic, with synthesized chords, claps, and vocals.
In a series of tweets, Mashayabhuqe explained the shift of his sound, which comes after his 2018 announcement to fans about his departure from what people thought they “know or knew about Mashayabhuqe Kamamba music.”

If your plan is to stay the same til your last days, you gonna hate my album and I am okay with that. #STARMARS

What was most interesting about part of the rapper’s commentary on his album was his allusion to the fact that he “ain’t got fans over here.” Granted the conversations have not always been as open as they ought to be, nevertheless, actors in the industry have long commented on how artists like Mashaya don’t receive enough love from home. At the same time, Mashaya’s statement of not having fans at home should be taken with a grain of salt on account of the various people that have long commented on, waited for, and streamed his music in the hopes of another drop.
So well aware I ain’t got fans over here so what i need to do is to buy them from everywhere in the world. #STARMARS
