Culture, defined as the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively, is widely expressed by every being, be it as an individual, or as a collective, we all have that one or two things we do religiously. These are the things that keep us going and enable us to get up and say, "Well, I still got this."
An Imraan Christian documentary, Just Dala, takes us through Cape Town's most celebrated culture, the sneaker culture. As it begins, we are taken through a brief history of how Cape Town was captured when colonial administrator Jan Van Riebeeck sailed to the Cape sea, and just as it goes, the "privileged" took over the land, and the natives of the land were forcefully shifted to more poverty stricken areas, forced to live in and acclimatise to cluster. To keep going, calling themselves the Bubbleheads, the coloured in the Cape flats accustomed themselves to sneakers, calling it a culture of their own as they had been previously labelled as "uncultured."
Fresh kicks, old kicks, borrowed kicks, whatever kicks, they are regarded as an investment in the Cape Town streets, given that people would rather have less to eat while wearing the most expensive sneakers, the culture is their way of life. Featured on the doccie is Kaapstad Naaier, YoungstaCpt, who expresses that naturally, they want to excel, and excel means they're gonna go up, and "bubble" makes them feel like they're up there somewhere in the clouds. "We knew that if we put that on our feet, it would elevate us from a temporary status of that privileged success," YoungstaCpt proclaims. The doccie also highlights some of the most influential moments and people who have contributed to this culture. Identifying the struggle and finding your identity in the midst of it is key, the Bubbleheads have it on lock. It's all for the takkies. Run with the documentary below:
