Shane Eagle has raised the bar in terms of conceptual visuals in SA hip hop as he finally unleashed his anticipated YellowVerse project this past weekend. What we all initially thought would come out as some (new) music project turned out to be a visual project in short film format housing some music from his debut album, Yellow, and his last single THE MOON!
Shane Eagle gives full life to his cosmic and out of world concepts as he takes us through the different planets in the YellowVerse with every new song as a soundtrack in the film. Opening with Empty Highways, we find Shane stark in the dead of a hypothetical night surrounded by a galaxy that is closer to the surface than we are normally accustomed to. From the opening you can already tell that you're in for a trip. He then travels to Betelgeuse, an Orion star in the real astroworld, where he escapes the claws of some dragon-like creature to find peace smoking a blunt in the tranquil environment. While you might wonder if the Betelgeuse star can actually house human life, I don't think that's a point to dwell on in this particular circumstance. Shane Eagle continues his journey into Super Earth, my favourite planet in the short film, where he continues his lone mission as he stands on aesthetically appeasing hills on the planet rapping along to MIHI. From there he meets his love (in real life too) where they dwell in solace on Planet Love before Shane ends up on the Moon. We just love the serenity of this visual and the strong message it has about trusting your own dope. In this visual, Shane's artistic expression is amplified with his reclusive nature and it forms some enigmatic force that draws you into a deeper curiosity about his state of mind. More than anything, I get feelings of contentment and being comfortable in one's own company to be the explorer that you can be - something that a lot of young people shy away from. This motion picture is certainly groundbreaking. It being a breath of fresh air is an understatement as it literally elevates the bar for concepts in visual representations by artists. An incredible job well done to the team for this astounding execution.
