@djsupernova U(SA) @usadocuseries Episode 3: Influence

By @Lenoir on 10/06/2017 in Watch

On the third episode of U(SA), Dj Supernova talks Influence with Okmalumkoolkat and Khuli Chana where they both speak about what impacted their love for the music. Collecting vinyl records used to be a thing back in the day and Malum speaks about how he used to collect bubblegum music, also some Kwaito for the culture. He then goes on to speak about his creative process when making music and how sampling old songs gives kids the chance to hear what he grew up listening to. Supernova then asks where Malum sees SA Hip Hop in the future to which the latter responded with a hopeful dream of us having our own genre without the specificity and it not only being considered SA Hip Hop anymore.

Nas' The World Is Yours made Khuli fall in love with Hip Hop although he had no idea what Nas was rapping about. Khuli speaks about how he came into the game, how Morafe formed, and being a Motswako fan this took me all the way back. Many rappers in South Africa, the OG Motswakolistas in this case, always talk about having started rapping in English before being influenced by somebody to rap in their native tongues. I'm always filled with pride whenever someone speaks about how HHP put them on or inspired them, and Khuli is someone who never forgets to pay homage. Like his MyThrone Records and Cassper Nyovest's Family Tree, Khuli hopes for a future with more indie labels in South Africa. "I used to be that guy who never liked to collaborate but ever since that Patoranking Fire collab, my situation flipped - I feel like a new artist." You ain't heard the whole thing yet!
