I just love it when someone tells the story of the evolution of South African Hip Hop in their own words because you get to hear about their experiences and their thinking, not to mention all the dope music they grew up listening to. Dj Supernova gives us a new seven-episode docuseries called U(SA) and he speaks about the evolution of Hip Hop in South Africa while also noting influences from the States. The first episode is titled Essential, beginning with Nova narrating while we see a bunch of clips from people's everyday lives as he talks about how rappers' socio-economic difficulties played a major role in the development of Hip Hop. He later mentions the importance of the Dj, stating that he/ she is responsible for creating the ambience for people to enjoy the music.
We then get to see old clips from Nova's interviews and him sharing stories about his come up and his involvement in Hip Hop, especially in South Africa. His plan of trying to bridge the gap between American and South African Hip Hop had me thinking about HHP's concept of Daraja ("Bridge" in Swahili) and how he worked on trying to close the gap between African artists, also reminded me of Khuli Chana's One Source. Nova then mentions that he would like to help merge both audiences with the hopes of helping enhance both parties' understanding of one another. On his trip to South Africa, Nova said his main objective was to see if he could rock a crowd totally foreign to him, the video then fades and Stilo and Truhitz's Sefolosha plays in the background. Already looking forward to the next episodes.
