Zee Nxumalo Releases A Cinematic Interpretation of her Chart-dominating Hit Single, ‘Ngisakuthanda’

Zee Nxumalo has officially entered a defining new era in her career with the release of her first short film, Ngisakuthanda—a cinematic interpretation of her chart-dominating hit single. Dropped on the one-year anniversary of the record that transformed her into one of the country’s most streamed new artists, the film signals a striking evolution in her artistry and a confident expansion into visual storytelling.

The release arrives during a milestone moment in her career, following a year of unparalleled growth and cultural imprint.

Ngisakuthanda—originally celebrated for its emotional honesty and vulnerability—takes on new life in its film adaptation. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Kuda Jemba, the short film explores themes of first love, regret, and the quiet heartbreaks that shape young adulthood. Anchored by stillness, silence, and visual nuance, the narrative reflects the unsaid truths that often hold the heaviest weight.

Released digitally on Friday, 21 November, the film surpassed 200,000 views within the first 72 hours, with fans praising it as bold, emotional, and unlike anything currently coming out of the South African music landscape.

In the film, Zee delivers a performance that reveals a new facet of her creative identity. Guided by actor, writer, and director Anelisa Phewa, she embraces the challenge of acting alongside rising talent Thandolwethu Olly Zondi, whose sincerity deepens the emotional resonance between the characters.
