Washa X is making waves with a fresh collaboration that brings together some of South Africa’s most exciting talent. Teaming up with Gqom hitmaker Thobeka, YungBoyVegeta of the buzzing Hip Hop collective The Qwellers, Audio Addicts, Kiing Bhutie, and D[NOWHERE]J, the Pietermaritzburg-born artist delivers a sound that defies categorization. The track blends rave culture, Hip Hop swagger, and the feel-good energy of Afro dance music, creating a project that encourages listeners to move, smile and immerse themselves fully in the music.
On Instagram, Washa X shared, “It’s all about bringing people together through the music we love, no matter where you come from or what you identify with. Dance, feel free, and enjoy the ride.” This sentiment underscores the collaborative nature of the track, where each artist brings a piece of their identity, crafting a shared experience that’s as infectious as it is joyful.
Growing up in Pietermaritzburg, Washa X developed a ‘genre-fluid’ approach to music. He describes his sound as a mix of dance music and Hip Hop, shaped by the two worlds he grew up in. The Lokishi-inspired beats of his father’s taxi rides introduced him to the energetic rhythms of Kasi dance music, while his mother, a teacher living in the suburbs, exposed him to the storytelling and lyricism of Hip Hop. These influences come together in his music, allowing him to educate through rhythm while igniting movement and happiness on the dance floor.
Washa X has steadily built a reputation for crossing genre boundaries, collaborating with artists who share his vision of musical inclusivity. His work with Durban’s Gqom innovators, including Thobeka and members of The Qwellers, reflects his dedication to blending diverse sounds and backgrounds. This latest collaboration continues that mission, offering a vibrant soundtrack that resonates across South Africa’s rich musical landscape.
More than just a song, the collaboration serves as a celebration of joy, freedom, and cultural connection. Each contributor adds a unique flavor, creating a fusion that’s immediate and compelling. Washa X’s approach to music is as much about shared experience as it is about rhythm, proving that when artists from different worlds unite, the result can be electrifying.
With this project, Washa X not only delivers a track built to move audiences but also solidifies his place as an artist unafraid to blur lines, explore creativity and invite listeners into a world where music is a bridge and a celebration.
