South African artist, Sipho the Gift returns with a bold new album, This Was Never That, A reflective conceptual album with a theme of reflection and change through the passage of time.

The album is divided into three distinct parts, each representing a stage of life, transformation, or perspective. The album uses time as a narrative device to mirror the arc of human experience — from the rawness of newness to the wisdom gained with time.

TWNT deliberately uses structural contrast to create sonic tension in each song, mirroring the dualities we confront in life: past and present, loss and renewal, innocence and experience. The transitions can be subtle or abrupt, depending on how the mood and musical themes evolve.

The themes on the album range from the parallel between the value of money and time in relationships – $PARE ₵HANGE, a meditation on the value of patience – OIL ON CANVAS, to the blossoming – A CHANT FOR THE NYMPH, and eventual withering of love – A LIL INTERLUDE, to the grief of losing a father – A FATHERS LOVE II, and eventually resolve with finding the blessing in the tragedy while making sense of the growing pains in life with the passage of time – BLESSINGS.

TWNT features the talents of alternative acts such as Phiwo, Lia Butler, and Fentse, with production from long-time collaborators Mojavki, Oshoku, and Sipho the Gift himself.

“UKUDE” — meaning far away — is a heart-wrenching ode to distance and longing. The song follows a man missing his lover with an ache so deep it becomes its own rhythm. His voice drifts between hope and helplessness, searching for a presence he can no longer touch. Produced by Sipho the Gift, the track marks his first venture into amapiano as a vocalist, blending tender vocals with warm log drums and airy pads.

“UKUDE” captures the quiet devastation of love stretched across distance and time, where every beat feels like a plea for her return.

ACFTN is a sultry, time-bending meditation on passionate lovemaking, named after an evocative rose-centred Gucci fragrance. The song unfolds slowly, blooming through whispers, yearning melodies, and exploratory questions before rising into a smouldering overflow of passion. Anchored by Oshoku’s enveloping, bass-heavy production, it moves with a hypnotic pulse that feels both intimate and cinematic.

Alt-R&B star Phiwo delivers magnetic, velvet-toned vocals that drift between vulnerability and desire, creating a sensual push-and-pull that shapes the song’s emotional core. ACFTN captures the chemistry between two bodies and the suspended moment where time stands still.

This marks the second collaboration between Sipho and Phiwo, following their 2024 collaboration, titled FUBU.
