On a recent episode of 947 Joburg on Instagram, Mo Flava took on the challenging task of rating the greatest figures in South African house music. The list he worked through featured some of the most influential names in the scene, including Oskido, DJ Fresh, DJ Kent, DJ Tira, Euphonik, DJ Zinhle, DJ Maphorisa, Black Motion, Heavy K, Vinny Da Vinci, Liquid Deep, DJ Christos, Da Capo and Black Coffee.

When asked to choose between Oskido and DJ Fresh, Mo Flava described the decision as difficult, acknowledging Oskido as “the godfather of house music” he said “Yoh this is a tough one, I mean Oskido is a godfather but DJ Fresh.” The next pairing was DJ Fresh versus DJ Kent, where he settled on DJ Kent, noting, “Even he would say DJ Kent, so I’d probably say DJ Kent.”

The ratings continued with DJ Kent facing Euphonik, DJ Tira, and DJ Maphorisa. Mo Flava consistently chose DJ Kent, explaining in the case of Maphorisa, “Damn, look in terms of hits and I mean you can verify this but I’m pretty sure that Maphorisa probably has more hits but like this is godly level cause DJ Kent is a god and Maphorisa is a god. But as a DJ it’s gotta be Kent.”

Further comparisons included DJ Kent against Heavy K, Black Motion, Vinny Da Vinci, Liquid Deep, DJ Christos, DJ Zinhle, and Da Capo, with DJ Kent being Mo Flava’s choice each time. The only exception came when DJ Kent was matched with Black Coffee. Here, Mo Flava chose Black Coffee, adding, “If you had said Shimza, I was gonna go for Shimza.”

Throughout the ratings, Mo Flava emphasized the talent, influence and track record of each artist, highlighting DJ Kent’s consistent presence across the choices. The session offered a clear view of who stands out in the South African house music landscape according to one of the country’s prominent radio personalities.

The list spanned veterans and current trailblazers, from foundational figures like Oskido to contemporary heavyweights such as Black Coffee and DJ Maphorisa. By going through each comparison in detail, Mo Flava provided listeners with insight into both historical contributions and current impact within the genre.

Fans tuning in were able to see the thought process behind each choice, giving context to the legacies of these artists. The conversation reaffirmed the significance of house music in South Africa and the artists who have shaped its evolution over the years.
