Rising Maskandi duo Istimela Samawele, made up of twin brothers Bhekizizwe Thandokuhle Phakathi and Bhekozayo Thandoluhle Phakathi, proudly release their powerful new single “Cognac”, featuring Maskandi icon uGatsheni and Afropop sensations Q Twins. Hailing from the village of Kwafuduka in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal, the duo continues to fuse traditional Maskandi with fresh youthful energy, soulful harmonies, and truth-telling lyricism. Now signed to TalEmpire, Istimela Samawele are carving a new path in contemporary Maskandi music.
Their latest single, “Cognac,” digs deep into a storyline many South Africans will recognise — a man who prefers spending his money on nightlife and alcohol rather than investing in meaningful life responsibilities such as buying cattle, paying lobola, building a home, or creating a family legacy. Using sharp humour and relatable storytelling, the song unpacks the consequences of misplaced priorities.
The track opens with the striking line: “Yaphela imali yam, bizani uBar Man, aletha iCognac, a-adde iTonic, ngiqede iBonus,” which translates to: “My money is gone. Call the barman to bring cognac and tonic — let me finish my bonus.”
This humorous yet sobering moment reflects how quickly year-end bonuses can disappear when lifestyle choices overshadow long-term goals. Blending Maskandi and Afropop elements, “Cognac” captures the realities of financial pressures, cultural expectations, and the temptations that derail personal progress.
Speaking on the inspiration behind the single, Bhekizizwe shares: “We wanted to tell a story that feels real — a story you hear in the village, in the taxi, even at work. ‘Cognac’ is entertaining, but it’s also a reminder about where our money goes.”
His twin brother Bhekozayo adds: “Our music has always been about truth. If people can dance, laugh, and still reflect on their lives after listening, then we’ve done our job.”
“Cognac” is now available on all major streaming platforms.
