Flvme has opened up about the creative process behind naming his latest album, “BLVCK & WHiTE.” Speaking on a recent episode of The Element Podcast, he shared how the title was not part of the original plan and how a difficult personal experience unexpectedly shaped the direction of the project.
During the conversation, Flvme revealed that the period leading up to the album was marked by a traumatic incident. Reflecting on what happened, he said, “I had just come from getting robbed.” According to him, the situation forced him to rethink how he wanted to approach the project that he had been preparing.
He explained that his early intention was to release a different body of work entirely. Flvme said, “I had an album and I already had this intention that I was going to drop an album called ‘Winter Nights’ because I had been promising people that ‘Winter Nights’ is on the way.” He had carried that commitment with him throughout the early creative stages, believing that listeners were expecting that specific release and that he needed to deliver on it.
Even while building the new material, he maintained the idea that the project would eventually become “Winter Nights.” As he described it, “Even while I was working on the album, I still kept the same intention of trying to create ‘Winter Nights.” However, as the process continued, it became increasingly clear to him that the music was taking a different shape.
He said, “The more I kept creating, it just felt like it didn’t work for that. It was not going hand in hand.”
Realizing that the music was moving in its own direction, Flvme attempted to find a different title that matched the tone of the tracks. At one point, he considered a title that reflected the emotional themes within the album. He explained, “I actually ended up landing on ‘Passion and Pain,’ but then again I felt like the album expresses more than that.”
With the project evolving beyond the original concepts, the search for the right title continued until he found one that captured the full range of experiences behind the music. Flvme said he finally settled on “BLVCK & WHiTE”, adding, “I felt like it is just easier for people to remember.”
The rapper’s explanation shows how deeply personal events, along with creative instinct, shaped the direction of the album. “BLVCK & WHiTE” ultimately represents a balance of emotion and simplicity, emerging naturally from a process that did not go as initially planned.
