During a recent episode of 5 Hip Hop Nights With DJ Speedsta, South African rapper Emtee reflected on the circumstances surrounding the creation of his song “We Up.” The track, widely regarded as one of his early breakout singles, was recorded at a time when the artist was facing personal and financial difficulties.
“I recorded that song at my lowest, I was just manifesting stuff,” Emtee said during the interview. He spoke about his living situation at the time, describing the uncertainty he and his peers experienced as young musicians trying to make it in the industry. “Just me and homies in that 2 bedroom apartment wondering when we’re gonna pay the rent, where the rent money is gonna come from and I just went ahead and made a song about that not knowing that the blessings are really coming.”
He added that the song’s meaning went beyond material success. “So ‘We Up’ is a spiritual song, it did wonders for us as well.”
We Up was released in 2015 as one of the lead singles from Emtee’s debut studio album Avery, which went on to receive critical acclaim and commercial success. The song played a key role in establishing Emtee as a new voice in South African hip hop, following the momentum of his earlier hit single “Roll Up.”
Lyrically, We Up focuses on themes of ambition, persistence, and overcoming adversity. The track combines melodic hooks with autobiographical storytelling, reflecting the artist’s aspirations and the harsh realities of his early life. In its verses, Emtee raps about pushing through struggle, staying focused on goals, and believing in future success despite present setbacks.
At the time of its release, the song resonated strongly with young listeners across South Africa, many of whom identified with the message of rising above difficult circumstances. It also marked a shift in Emtee’s artistic direction, introducing a more introspective tone that would come to characterize much of his later work.
The song’s production features layered synths and a laid-back tempo that underscore Emtee’s vocal delivery. The combination of emotional content and polished production helped We Up become a fan favorite and earned it consistent radio rotation in the year following its release.
Now, years after its debut, Emtee continues to credit We Up as a pivotal track in his career, one born out of struggle, but ultimately symbolic of personal and professional growth.
