Emtee Talks On How ‘We Up’ Manifested From His Lowest Point

During a recent episode of 5 Hip Hop Nights With DJ Speedsta, South African rapper Emtee reflected on the circumstances surrounding the creation of his song “We Up.” The track, widely regarded as one of his early breakout singles, was recorded at a time when the artist was facing personal and financial difficulties.

“I recorded that song at my lowest, I was just manifesting stuff,” Emtee said during the interview. He spoke about his living situation at the time, describing the uncertainty he and his peers experienced as young musicians trying to make it in the industry. “Just me and homies in that 2 bedroom apartment wondering when we’re gonna pay the rent, where the rent money is gonna come from and I just went ahead and made a song about that not knowing that the blessings are really coming.”

He added that the song’s meaning went beyond material success. “So ‘We Up’ is a spiritual song, it did wonders for us as well.”

We Up was released in 2015 as one of the lead singles from Emtee’s debut studio album Avery, which went on to receive critical acclaim and commercial success. The song played a key role in establishing Emtee as a new voice in South African hip hop, following the momentum of his earlier hit single “Roll Up.”
