During an exclusive interview at the recent Street Fest, DJ Sliqe spoke in detail about the origins of The Mxr, a project that has grown into a recognised creative platform within South Africa’s hip-hop and DJ culture. The award-winning producer explained that the idea for The Mxr was not originally planned as a long-term concept but rather started as a practical move around his music releases.

According to DJ Sliqe, The Mxr came together in 2024 shortly after the release of Inja Yami Volume 3. He explained that the main goal at the time was to promote the album while giving listeners access to most of the songs in a single experience. “The Mxr idea came about in 2024 just taking out the Inja Yami Volume 3,” he said. “I wanted to promote the album and play most of the songs.”

Instead of traditional promotion, DJ Sliqe decided to put together a mix that allowed the music to flow continuously. This first mix was released with no expectations beyond sharing the project. However, the response was immediate and noticeable. “So I did like a mix, it kind of went crazy,” he said. Encouraged by the reception, he followed it up with another mix, which received similar attention.

As the audience continued to grow, The Mxr naturally developed into a recurring concept. DJ Sliqe explained that the consistency and engagement turned the project into something more personal and ongoing. “Then I did another one, it kind of went crazy, so I was like, okay cool, it became a lifestyle,” he added.

Over time, The Mxr evolved from a promotional mix into a creative series that reflects DJ Sliqe’s musical direction and influence. Each release focuses on blending hip-hop sounds with carefully selected tracks, creating a seamless listening experience. The format has also allowed room for collaboration, visual presentation, and experimentation beyond traditional DJ sets.

Reflecting on the journey, DJ Sliqe described the growth of The Mxr as an organic process. “Ideas became a reality, I guess, and then we’re here now,” he said. His comments highlight how the project progressed naturally from a simple concept into an established platform.

Today, The Mxr stands as part of DJ Sliqe’s broader body of work, representing both his approach to music curation and his connection with listeners. What began as an album-driven idea has since become a consistent feature in his creative output.
