In his new project titled ‘Maglera Tapes’, Maglera Doe Boy proves he’s an encyclopedia of culture by tapping into different musical pockets, a wide range of references, and a combination of big-name guests and emerging artists.
“I wanted to show people how much I know. People try box me because I come from street culture. But in the street culture, I wasn’t just with black people. We were selling drugs to white people and all types of niggas,” Maglera Doe Boy said during the album’s listening session.
The eclectic ‘Maglera Tapes’ consists of 19 songs that take the listener into Magelra Doe Boy’s vast knowledge and taste. “Township youth is really here/ It’s the renaissance in this auspicious affair,” he raps on ‘Ke Hip Hop Dog’, a drumless track that also features Blxckie.
This renaissance is marked by a diverse list of guests including big names such as Nasty C, Cassper Nyovest, Okmalumkoolkat, Thato Saul, Loatinover Pounds, Marcus Harvey, Nadia Nakai, and 25K. To prove he’s still tapped into the streets, Maglera Doe Boy also invites emerging and alternative voices like Lia Butler and Botswana’s WNDRSZN.
The latter appears on the uptempo ‘Jealousy’ and ‘Speak Love’, a walking-down-the-aisle Afro-Pop thumper that also features MDB frequent collaborator Marcus Harvey.
‘So Fly’ samples Kevin Campbell’s R&B classic ‘Can We Talk’ while ‘Capetown Music’, which leans towards EDM sonically, is a nod to the city’s dance music scene.
But with all this experimentation, Maglera Doe Boy maintains his street essence on songs like ‘Envy’, ’New Milano’ and ‘Chowmein’.
“That is just the energy of the ‘Maglera Tapes’. I think I’ll do a Maglera Tapes maybe every year, every two years, we’ll decide. But we will always bring out the culture,” Maglera Doe Boy says.
The different pockets Maglera taps into on ‘Maglera Tapes’ could be overwhelming and confusing to some listeners but when consumed for what it is, which is an exploration of MDB’s tastes, it’s a strong project. Ke art ase content.
