ThandoNje will be hosting her inaugural headline show at the South African State Theatre on Friday, the 11th of October.
The event will feature supporting live performances by Baby S.O.N, Makhanj, Saul Madiope, Wav Gardn, and will be hosted by Gugulethu Nyatsumba.
In the Q&A below, ThandoNje takes us into her headspace and discusses the upcoming concert and her music.
What inspired the idea of a solo show?
I’ve always loved the idea of hosting a show as an independent artist, not just to share music with my supporters but also just to break barriers as an independent artist. The goal really has always been to show independent artists that anything is possible as long as you trust and believe in yourself.
I’d also love to build brand sponsorship organically, if I invest in myself and work hard enough, they’ll hopefully and eventually see independent artists as a good investment.
How did you pick the supporting acts?
All the artists on the lineup are artists I’ve collaborated with throughout my career as well as some upcoming artists which I think deserve a platform to share their artistry. With regards to the DJs, these are people I just sonically resonate with.
Your projects ‘Frequency’ and ‘Stillness.’ look and sound like they are part of a series. Can you tell us about the connection between the two projects if there’s any?
I’ve noticed a pattern with my album releases, being that each project has a 2-year difference and that’s why I’m starting to see the series you speak of. I think for me, these 2 projects are a reflection of my journey as an artist (both spiritually and mentally) and one is a continuation of the other. What I’m most excited for this is my next album because I think that’s where the series comes to end and we then have a 3-part series about ThandoNje as a musician.
You refer to your music as “New Age Soul”. How would you describe that sound and what drew you to it?
New Age Soul for me has always just been about redefining the norm, so to me it’s every genre of music just without the industry definitions or categories. It’s also just to define my sound as an artist, it’s different in its own way.
Why should music fans attend your show this weekend?
The fans should attend the show to support me as an independent artist. I need it!!
Jokes aside, I think anyone who listens to my music understands the kind of healing this show is going to bring, so if you ever need to let go of the heaviness in your life or ever needed some therapy this would be your one-stop shop/show. I’m just here to share my gift to those who need it.
