South African & Cultural References Spotted In Tyla’s ‘Jump’ Visuals

By @AtlehangMoloi on 05/23/2024 in Features

An X fan page, @TylaClub for Grammy award-winner, Tyla recently shared an interesting thread, dissecting South African and cultural references spotted in Tyla’s latest music video for her acclaimed single, ‘Jump’ featuring Gunna and Skillibeng.

The visuals for ‘Jump’ were shot in Tyla’s hometown, Johannesburg. Tyla makes viewers aware of not only glamourised places in South Africa but shows all parts, “good and perceived "bad" which made her who she is today.”

This is seen with the Hillbrow tower which appears in the video's opening scene. This indicates where the visuals were shot. Hillbrow is an inner city residential neighbourhood in Johannesburg known for its high levels of population density, unemployment, poverty, sex work and crime.

The video includes scenes at a shebeen. Shebeens have a rich history in South Africa and are closely tied to the country's apartheid era, of which despite their illegal status, have played a significant role in uniting the community and providing a sense of identity and belonging.

Tyla is depicted braiding her hair in true South African style; outdoors, and parting the hair fiber for her hairdresser. She is also seen eating Go-Slo’s; popular snacks mostly available in foreign tuck shops in South Africa. A group of men are gathered to play a classic game of dice (popularly known as Morabaraba); a traditional two-player strategy board game played in South Africa and Botswana.

The single ‘Jump’ is housed on Tyla’s debut album, ’TYLA’ which was released on March 22nd. The music video dropped on May 20th.
