Amakipkip is feeling a little nostalgic. The popular fashion brand, which is known for its iconic T-shirts, is bringing back the classic Amakipkip Tee, which, in the 2000s, turned a stall at The Zone in Rosebank into a brand that’s weaved into the fabric of South African music and youth culture.
Initially created as a promo tool for the stall that sold other brands at The Zone, The OG Tee was popularised by Da Les who wore it on the ‘What’s With The Attitude’ video by Jozi as well as ‘Muthaland’ and his first solo single ‘Tippy Toes’ and several other music videos and shoots.
From then on, the Amakipkip Tee with the distinct text and triangle logo was everywhere. A new iteration of the OG Tee substituted the triangle for the African map a few years later and it was just as successful. The brand continued its domination with the BBM logo which was also everywhere.
Amakipkip slowed down in the first half of the 2010s before returning with the yellow T-shirts, cape and backpacks that you may have seen being rocked by the likes of Emtee and Tweezy.
Amakipkip remains one of the biggest brands and, unlike most of its peers, it has stood the test of time. Music and relationships with artists remain a huge part of Amakipkip’s operation. They dropped a dope T-shirt in memory of DJ Citi Lyts after his passing. Their AKA tribute shirt didn’t go so well as The Forbes family expressed they were never part of the process.
It’s in the last three years that Amakipkip regained its former glory with their short and long sleeve Zebra Tees which are almost as popular as the OG Tee. You’ve seen it on Amapiano and Hip-Hop music videos, your friends, cousins and haters’ backs.
As they bring back the OG Tee, Amakipkip also partners with Emtee on a T-shirt that has Emtee’s logo on the front. Emtee was also seen rocking The OG Tee alongside his boys who were rocking the Emtee and Amakipkip collaboration.
Artists collaborating with brands for their merch is usually a win-win for the game. It’s a moment but also ensures a high quality product for the user.
Head over to Amakipkip’s online store or one of their physical shops to cop some units.
