Nino Fresko Explores Self-Discovery, Introspection & Authenticity In New Project ‘Fly For Magriza’

By @AtlehangMoloi on 02/26/2024 in Projects You Should Hear

Free State-born rapper, songwriter and producer, Nino Fresko has released a new project titled ‘Fly For Magriza’.

‘Fly For Magriza’ is a 13-track oeuvre that includes two vocal contributions from emerging artists, Keeme and Fentse.

According to Nino Fresko, the project is inspired by his move to Johannesburg from the Free State, which was when he began to encounter many challenges which became lessons, as well as begin his journey to self-discovery through self-introspection.

“‘Fly For Magriza’ is a project inspired by when I moved to Johannesburg. I had to self-introspect to pinpoint who and what I wanted people to see and feel when they learned about me. The more challenging my journey got here in Johannesburg, the more it led me to wonder: who exactly am I trying to make proud?”

To emphasise on the project title ‘Fly For Magriza’, Nino explained that his mother and grandmother have been supporting and encouraging him to pursue his music career since he was young. And despite losing his drive when he realised how heavily saturated the music industry is in Johannesburg, he created this project to relive the drive his mother and grandmother had witnessed in him growing up.

“My mother and my gran were the people who were pushing me to keep on going, doing these late night performances etc… And how I got to the title ‘Fly For Magriza’ is because when I got to Joburg, I felt like I was losing that element of trying to get my name out there…. “ he shared. “I got to ‘Fly For Magriza’ because I wanted to be the person that they saw when they were letting me perform when I was young.”

Nino Fresko’s project roll-out was inspired by his distinct “cowboy” style which was influenced by his hometown, as well as solidifying himself and his entourage as something new, different and original by recreating the South African flag and calling themselves “the new South Africa”.

“What we started with was the cowboy hat. I come from Bethlehem in the Free State which is considered like a farm town. I wanted something that would resemble someone that I came from the farm, like a cowboy”, Nino expressed. “I wanted to also have a way of saying this is the new South Africa. Like Nino Fresko and everyone else that’s coming with him is the new South Africa.”
