In an exclusive interview with Apple Music's Africa Now Radio set to drop on December 15, 2023, Rema, the Nigerian Afropop sensation, shared profound insights into his musical journey.
The conversation with Nandi Madida covered his chart-topping hit ‘Calm Down,’ his latest EP 'RAVAGE' and his interest in making Amapiano.
Rema conveyed that his musical abilities aren't a calculated process but rather a spiritual calling. He follows an internal voice, positioning himself as a vessel destined to make a lasting mark on the Continent and the world at large.
Exploring Amapiano
A significant highlight of the interview was Rema's personal views on how to authentically explore Amapiano, the South African genre that has become a global sound and seen the likes of Asake, Wizkid and Burna Boy take on the sound.
“I feel like tapping into a sound, most especially when it’s within Africa, I take my time to study,” Rema said. “I don’t jump on the wave, I take my time to understand things. When me and Musa Keys were in the studio, I was like ‘I know a lot of Nigerians are doing amapiano but I need you to educate me about amapiano’. I don’t want to just hop on it. Yes I can make a banger, but it’s like can you teach me?
