MTV VMAs Add Afrobeats Category To This Year’s Awards

MTV has released the nominations for the VMAs 2023, introducing a new category for Best Afrobeats and announcing nominations for Female Artist Of The Year.

This is a huge year for African music in the awards world. In June, The Academy announced the addition of the Best African Music Performance category which will cast the spotlight on various genres from the continent. 

The VMAs’ Best Afrobeats category is heavily focused on Nigeria as all but one of the nominees (Cameroon’s Libianca) are from Naija. Musa Keys represents South Africa on Davido’s hit ‘Unavailable’ which he’s feature in.
