Mandoza’s 6-Part Biopic ‘Nkalakatha: The Life of Mandoza’ Is Premiering on BET Africa Next Month

‘Nkalakatha: the Life of Mandoza ,’ a six-part biopic that delves into the life of the late Kwaito legend Mandoza, real name Mduduzi Edmond Tshabala, is premiering on 16 August 2023, exclusively on BET Africa (DStv Channel 129), at 21:00 CAT.

‘Nkalakatha: the Life of Mandoza’ is a dramatisation of Mandoza's life from his humble beginnings, his meteoric rise to stardom, and the bittersweet years leading up to his untimely departure in 2016. 

"Mandoza was a true icon, whose music transcended boundaries and united a nation. His magnetic presence and powerful lyrics resonated with people from all walks of life, breaking down racial divides and creating a sense of unity. It is imperative that we tell the stories of extraordinary heroes like Mandoza, who were larger than life and left an indelible mark on pop culture across the continent,” says Monde Twala, Senior Vice President & GM Paramount Africa & Lead BET International.

He adds, “Through 'Nkalakatha: The Life of Mandoza,' we honour his legacy and celebrate his profound impact, reminding us all of the power of music, storytelling and the ability of individuals to bring people together.”

The role of Mandoza will be portrayed by Wiseman Mncube, who has proven a talented and skilled actor on shows like ‘Ehostela’, ‘The Wife’ and ‘Shaka Ilembe’. 

“Before shooting, I had the incredible opportunity to spend a few days in Zola, immersing myself in Mandoza’s world. Mpho Tshabalala, Mandoza’s wife and Tumelo, his son were actively involved in the process, sharing a wealth of insights. The weight of portraying an icon was heavy on my shoulders. I felt a deep responsibility to honour his memory and pay homage to his legacy and I am honoured to have been chosen for the role.” said Wiseman.

Lorraine Moropa plays the role of Mandoza's wife, Mpho Tshabalala, an integral force behind the realisation of this biopic. Thandeka Dawn King portrays Nomazwe, capturing the significant moments in Mandoza's journey; Lillian Dube plays Gogo, while Nkosinathi "Mzambiya" Khoza takes on the role of Sechaba "Lollipop”, adding depth to the narrative.

The show’s executive producer is Mpho Tshabalala, Mandoza's widow. “This project was very close to my heart and is something I have been wanting to see come to life for quite some time,” she says.

Mandoza's children have also actively participated in the production. They eagerly await the moment when their father's story is shared with the world.

The biopic is a co-production between Biopic Films, Pomegranate Media, BET Africa, the DTIC, Vaughn Eaton, who was Mandoza’s manager. 

‘Nkalakatha: the Life of Mandoza’ is directed by award winning director and producer, Zuko Nodada.
