The 5-track ‘Kwaito Is Ours’ EP is a statement by Richi Rich and Suup Zulu, asserting their ownership of the Kwaito sound and challenging the misconception that it is an outdated South African genre.
Through their music, they aim to showcase that Kwaito has always been and will continue to be the foundation of urban music in South Africa. Even in more recent sounds, elements, beats, instruments, and influences of Kwaito can be heard, exemplifying its lasting impact.
Kwaito is a genre that South Africa can be proud of, with Amapiano being a notable recent example. Originating and created in South Africa, Amapiano demonstrates the continuous evolution of Kwaito.
“When people listen to our EP, the artists want them to feel a sense of pride in their South African heritage,” says Richi Rich and Soup Zulu.
Moreover, Richi and Suup seek to change the narrative surrounding Kwaito, challenging the notion that it is an outdated sound.
‘Kwaito Is Ours’ is an EP that aims to instil a sense of pride in one’s origins. The artists have created music that is authentically African, intended for Africans but also enjoyable by a global audience. Despite being in different provinces during the production process, Richi and Suup found this approach to be their favourite, allowing them to bring different perspectives to the tracks.
They emphasised their love for being in studio sessions together, showcasing their chemistry and collaboration.
