"As long as 'I'm Still Breathing', I will most assuredly have another opportunity to experience the darkness once more” - Mvula Drae
Arguably one of South Africa's most emotionally articulate, English, urban artists on the rise, Mvula Drae, released a solo EP titled, ‘My First Last Breath’. Which features 7 songs each depicting a phase of the process from the depths of depression to the esteem of healing, and to the clarity of joy.
"MFLB starts off in the moment where, for the first time, a glimpse of clarity becomes after a tiresome bout with depression. You'll sense an introspective, playful tinge of hope, followed by harsh judgment toward myself. More-so, as a rediscovery of self-awareness than anything malicious, though," Mvula Drae says.
To those who were fans of City Awards 'Artist of the Year' nominee, Mvula Drae, before MFLB, the tone of this EP was unexpectedly melodic, it was refreshing, and displayed a steadily maturing approach to his creativity.
"You'll hear that I'm finally far away enough from the murky dark corner of my canvas to see the bigger picture and recognise the value of the darkness I had been basking in. This perspective brought the beauty of darkness to light, and I start to question, who dared not make me aware of its beauty earlier?" Drae describes, as the EP hits the half-way mark.
While cryptic, or poetic as Drae himself might put it. His descriptions of the music from track 1 to 7 begin to reveal the intricacies of the artist's mind and take the listener on a journey that winds up being profoundly relatable, if they listen to the lyrics.
