In her new EP, VenusRaps, who’s known chiefly for her raw raps, lets loose a little. The beats on ‘Superstar’ are upbeat and VenusRaps uses more melodies than you’ve heard from her before.
Speaking during the EP’s listening party, VenusRaps explained the shift:
“This project represents a new era. I am a very frigid artist. I walked into the game and said I can rap and that’s my strength and that’s what I’m gonna do. And this project represents me branching out into more, understanding that I can do more and going out and executing more.”
The project opens with the catchy ’Mshine’ which wouldn’t feel out of place in AKA’s catalogue (think ‘F.R.E.E.’ and ‘Baddest’). VenusRaps has fun with it, rapping as proficiently as she always has and spicing it up with carefree vocals. The raunchy ‘Sneaky Link’ is just as catchy and VenusRaps sing-raps about, you guessed it, a sneaky link. It’s VenusRaps like you’ve never heard her before — light-hearted, sexy and just plain having fun.
‘Dese’, which maintains the same vibe sonically, comes with a sleek Buzzi Lee verse before VenusRaps closes the project with a hardcore rap banger, which features Hazy, to show that she may be flirting with Pop but she’s still one of the finest lyricists in Southy.
To bring her vision to life, VenusRaps teamed up with seasoned producer AirDee, who’s crafted hits for the likes of Ma-E, Cassper Nyovest, DJ Vigilante, Yanga Chief, KiD X, Kwesta, Locnville, YoungstaCPT and several other SA Hip-Hop stars.
