Nigerian Breakout Star Lojay’s New EP ‘Gangster Romantic’ Is A Cocktail of Afrobeats, R&B and Amapiano

By @SeptemberEleven on 03/09/2023 in Projects You Should Hear

You may known Nigerian Afrobeats star Lojay for 2022 hit single ‘Monalisa’, an Afrobeats and Amapiano fusion which features Chris Brown and Afrobeats super producer Sarz. Lojay is hot right now, and his latest EP, ‘Gangster Romantic’ comes with seven tracks that see him croon over beats that combine Afrobeats, R&B and Amapiano.

Lojay described Amapiano and Afrobeats as “sisters in the same family” in an interview on The Nadeska Show a few weeks before dropping the EP.

Lojay worked with the leaders of the ‘piano wave, DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small, on the mellow ‘CANADA’ in which Lojay tells the story of his encounter with a woman in a strip club over a subtle guitar and thumping log drum knocks.

Breaking down the song to Apple Music, Lojay said: “Funny enough, Maphorisa and I made ‘CANADA’ in Ghana, where I’d gone to the strip club the night before. I’m literally talking about wanting to change your life. I said it in a light way but it’s about a stripper who just wants to get to Canada—she’s not interested in anything else! I’m the type of person to have conversations with people in the club because you get a lot of interesting stories out of that. ‘How did you get here?’ is a very small question that can open up so much detail about someone and about society. This one girl just wanted to leave Ghana and that was the only thing on her mind. I guess that stuck with me—without me knowing—‘cause when Maphorisa played this beat it just flowed straight out.”

Nigerian producer Magic Sticks crafted an Amapiano banger on the vibey ‘AVAILABU’ which Lojay said was fun to record. “It’s a very positive song which I really enjoyed making. I was in a good mood around a couple of friends, with someone cooking in the background in this really nice house. There was no stress and this is the embodiment of the energy in the room when I was recording—I just want people to feel that same energy,” said Lojay.

Describing the EP’s content, which he said was inspired by his own encounters in the dating scene, Lojay said, “I guess I’m the bad boy on the negative side of love right now.”
