It was just yesterday when I heard SiBI's 2021 debut EP 'Riverside' for the very first time as I was simply scrolling through Apple Music and there it was being suggested. I clicked on the tape with zero expectations as I had no knowledge of the artist prior to listening to the EP so with that I listened to it with a very open ear. The EP blew me away as it details a variety of experiences in her life. At first I thought it was a full length RnB project but as you listen to it further you begin to understand the mixture of sounds from Hip-Hop to Soul.
It is more or less an evolution of what we know as 'Trap Soul'. The project is opened up by a song titled, 'Gang' which gets you into a state of comfort and relaxation as she sings the hook and raps her verse to a one instrument beat. The intro features TBO as he sings his verse when the beat drops taking you into the initial tone of the beat which is Hip-Hop infused with a touch of RnB as they sing about looking out for your people no matter the odds as they support you the same way you would support them. It is a very calm intro and it sets the mood of the project from the get go.
Each song stands out simply through the contrasting musical tale she tells with the featured artists such as Parlemo on 'Drive Thru', Gracis Isis and Benzo on 'Chill Out' as well as 3TWO1 on 'Get Down'. All artists utilised their vocal style to best compliment each other as they flow very much well with their amazing vocal play. SiBi is an artist to look out as her music very much does most of the representation of the talent she weighs. She is not only able to sing out her lungs but then she is also able to rap and that makes her stand out amongst many vocalists in the game. It is through her versatility that she will grow further in her career.
Although this project is two years old, it is very much classical as when I listened to it, I felt as if it was just released. Riverside is an amazing body of work and if you haven't given it listen yet then you should make time as it has a lot of substance that many can relate to from, heartbreak stories to all the remedies to healing a sore heart as well as simply finding love.
