How @Nasty_CSA and @carry1st Brought Music & Gaming Together

By @OfentsePhukubye on 02/22/2023 in SOL Special

Last year, the SlikourOnLife team documented Nasty C’s Ivsyon Army Tour which brought music and gaming together in partnership with mobile game publisher, Carry1st. today, we present to you the documentary ‘Music and Gaming: The Merge by Nasty C and Carry1st’.

Nasty C feels music and gaming shouldn’t be treated as separate at all.

“Regardless of what kind of musician you are, we all play games,” Nasty C says in the documentary, “When you go into the studio, t’s very intense in there, you have to come up with something that you hope will be a hit and give you accolades but there’ll be moments in between where you wanna just lose up and shake it all off, that’s when you play the game.”

Carry1st is a mobile games publisher serving the first generation of African smartphone users, which has reached millions of users across the region with games such as Mine Rescue and SpongeBob: Krusty Cook-Off. The company has improved access to mobile gaming through its partnership with Activision to establish local servers and allowing for local currency payments. “We knew if we wanted to bring Call of Duty Mobile to a new generation and a younger generation of South Africans, then we wanted to have a brand ambassador that could speak really authentically to the IP,” Lucy says, “and we knew that Nasty C already played Call of Duty, he already was streaming, he has millions of followers who not only love his music but also follow him for gaming.”

The Ivyson Gaming Tournament was a collaborative effort between Nasty C’s camp and Carry1st. This was subsequent to Nasty C's official brand collaboration with Call of Duty: Mobile and Carry1st, which took both music and gaming countrywide with stops in Joburg, Cape Town and Durban.

We needed help with coming up with ideas for tournaments and stuff like that,” Nasty C says. “We were already on our path to making this thing happen without the help of the gaming companies but we were like let’s get some professionals in it so we do it the right way.”

Joined by the likes of Tellaman, Lord Script, Maglera Doe Boy, Tshego Koke and several others, Nasty C took the music and gaming to the people and connected with them in a way he hasn’t before.
