‘Company’ is the latest single to drop from AKA’s upcoming album ‘Mass Country’. The single features Nigerian artist and producer KDDO (formerly Kiddominant) and it takes off where their 2018 collaboration ‘Fela In Versace’ left off as it refuses to be boxed into one genre; notably, there are no traces of 808s or the log drum which has been heard on AKA’s recent music.
The best sounds minimal without feeling empty, as a result ‘Comfort’ sounds mature, laidback and groovy at the same time. AKA sounds comfortable and hasn’t sounded so close to his old energetic self on a song in a while.
AKA sounds in good spirits which is just saddening, as it evokes memories of his light-heartedness and playful manner. ‘Company’ is the first single from ‘Mass Country’ to drop since the rapper’s tragic passing last week Friday. ‘Mass Country’ will be released posthumously next week Friday and the 14-track album will include the singles ‘Lemons (Lemonade)’, ‘Prada’, ‘Paradise’ and of course ‘Company’.
In a recent interview with HYPE, AKA said the album will merge multiple sounds that he either grew up with or has grown to like. “I wanted to put those worlds together: hip-hop, a bit of log drum, kwaito, rock ’n’ roll,” Mega said. “I wanted to put as many genres as I could together. And I wanted it to be like mass country… this is super South African, so it’s like mass South African. It’s for the masses of the country, you get me? But, at the same time, it’s from the soil; it’s from the earth.”
