Q&A: @royaugust_ Showcases His Rap Side In New EP ‘The 7th Avenue’

By @SeptemberEleven on 01/13/2023 in Projects You Should Hear

On his second offering ‘The 7th Avenue’, Roy August raps over dark basslines accompanied by hard drums and futuristic melodies, as inspired by the likes of Mike Dean, Wondagurl, Eestbound to name a few.

The Hip-Hop prodigy studied the new age Trap legends such as Travis Scott, Offset, Young Thug, and has mastered how to channel the vibes and share his life experiences through the music.

Roy August talks about the struggles of a young black man who comes from nothing trying to make it by any means possible. He raps about being able to obtain most of the things that he always aspired to have since he was young.

In he Q&A below, Roy August chats to SlikourOnLife about the EP, his connection to the number 7, his plans for 2023 and more.

On ‘777’, you had a handful of guests. Why did you choose to not have any features on this new project?

‘777’ was actually a playlist of different genres of songs I had been making between 2018 2019, and, at that time, I was sending out demos to artists I had a music connection with and just vibed with and they were willing to hop on the songs. On this project, I wanted to showcase the Rap side of me and I didn't want to put any guest features on this one because I want to have people actually listen to my project for Roy August as an artist.

Who did you work with in terms of production on the project? Can you take us through the production process?

On this project, I worked alone on the production, so the beats, mixing and mastering is all me, It's usually like that on most of the songs I work on. The production process is actually kind of quick because I record the song while making the beat and mix and master in the same session. I'm grateful that I can have a studio of my own at my house, but SportScene Studios always shows support in terms of studio.

Break down the project’s title ‘The 7th Avenue’.

The title 'The 7th Avenue' describes a certain mind state I've reached from the last project '777' which is a lucky number or meaning being at the right place at the right time. So, the 'The 7th Avenue' is like re-assurance that I've sort of reached a new level from that previous one.

What are your plans for 2023?

For 2023, the label I currently run has plans of releasing three more projects from myself and the artist I currently signed, and we definitely have music videos from 'The 7th Avenue' and also from an upcoming album set to release around June.
