Big Nuz Drop Their First Album in 7 Years ‘R Mashesha’

By @SeptemberEleven on 11/25/2022 in Projects You Should Hear

Seven years since they released ‘For The Fans’, Big Nuz return with a new album titled after their late third member R Mashesha who passed away in 2015. The album’s artwork shows an old photo of Mampintsha, Danger and R Mashesha which looks like it was taken before the trio broke into the mainstream.

The 15-track project is vintage Big Nuz with synth-laden beats with sprinkles of gqom laced with their light-hearted lyrics and animated adlibs. Longtime collaborators and fellow pioneers of the Durban dance music scene L’vovo, DJ Fisherman, DJ Tira and Babes Wodumo make appearances alongside newer names such as Q Twinz and Dj Yamza who appears on the lead single ‘Ngeke’. Maskandi artists Mdumazi is featured on ‘Just For Control’ ensuring a diversity of sounds.

Old Big Nuz fans will be kept and new ones will likely be recruited as the album manages to maintain Big Nuz’s original sound while moving forward a bit, especially the flotations with gqom. In true DKM fashion, the project is packed with tongue-in-cheek sing-alongs that will likely be incorporated into SA slang lexicon.
