After two collaborative projects with Kewand (The Sopranos and The Sopranos II), Mellow Don Picasso releases his first solo project ‘JUS’ TO HURT YOU’. The first half of ‘JUS’ TO HURT YOU’ consists of R&B songs that deal with the theme of separation. In the intro, he tells a woman leaving her was in her best interests, singing, “I didn’t do it just to hurt you.”
The second part of the intro breaks down what went wrong in the relationship. ‘Everything You Need” deals with an obsessive woman who is role-played by Mo$hpit Cindy who explains why she’s giving him this much love: “You the type of guy I wanna get up in my feels for/ Strike an eye and I know all these hunnies seeing it/ That’s why I’m blowin up your phone.” Ecco The Beast comes through on ‘KEEP CALLIN’’, a warning to a woman that she will regret jeopardising the relationship.
‘WYLN’’ features FLVME who delivers an outstanding heartfelt verse and he borrows a melody from Mary J Blidge’s 2001 hit ‘Family Affair’ which is also subtly sampled on the song. Other old school R&B songs sampled and interpolated on ‘Jus’ To Hurt You’ include Ginuwine’s ‘In Those Jeans’ and The Fugees’ ‘Ready or Not’.
The second part of ‘‘JUS’ TO HURT YOU’ is where most of the rap songs are and the lyrical content gets playful and a bit aggressive. H rolls solo on ‘SATIVA’ and ‘McDZZZ’ and is joined by Yung Swiss and crownedYung on the last track ‘LOPT/MENACE 2 SOCIETY’.
