Miss Pru announced her departure from Ambitiouz Entertainment earlier this week, making her the last of the label’s first generation of members to leave. So far, Miss Pru is the longest serving artist under AE. Since 2016, she has released a string of singles, all featuring multiple artists signed under Ambitiouz. The artists she has worked with range from Fifi Cooper, A-Reece, Emtee and Sjava to Malome Vector, Manny Yack and Cici; all from different generations of AE.
Her departure marks the end of an era, and, below, the SlikourOnLife team ranks Miss Pru DJ’s top 5 tracks released while she was under Ambitiouz Entertainment.
5. ‘uHulumeni’ (featuring Blaq Diamond, Malome Vector, Manny Yack, Fakaloice)
‘uHulumeni’ feels a bit like ‘Ameni’ 2.0 but for a different era. Even the style of visuals is similar. ‘uHulumeni’ showcased AE’s diverse lineup at the time and came with some memorable verses. Danya, one half of Blaq Diamond, dropped the subliminal “Kukhona abo obhuti engibazi ngedwa ‘bathi le sound eyabo kwanjani-njani/ Mina ngisindwa yindebe, bona basindwa yi pressure ye dayimane” which has such dope wordplay (pressure, diamonds…).
4. ‘Isaga Lam’ (featuring LaSauce, Gigi Lamayne, Nadia Nakai & Londie London)
Miss Pru and her “squad sama ntombazana” dealt with Tweezy’s beat accordingly with a strong hook from LaSauce who channeled her Rihanna and added her Zulu flavour. Tweezy’s bouncy rhythm ensured every rapper went hard bossed the fuck up.
3’. Ugesi’ (featuring Sjava, Saudi, Neo, Emtee, FLVME)
‘Ugesi’ is testament to just how monumental ‘Ameni’ was as the hook referenced a line from Saudi’s verse. But ‘Ugesi’ is its own song and came with some dope verses from Sjava, Emtee, Neo, Saudi and FLVME. ‘Ugesi’ is the closest you’ve gotten to hearing FLVME rap in vernac, which always seemed to be a requirement for AE artists.
2. “Price to Pay” (featuring Blaq Diamond & Malome Vector)
After two Afro-pop albums, Inqola (2017) and Umuthi (2020), the Blaq Diamond duo decided to go back to their rap roots in a song that recalled AE’s golden era but with an all-new line-up; the duo and Lesotho-born rapper Malome Vector who each deliver dope verses over a slow trap beat.
1. “Ameni” (featuring Sjava, A-Reece, B3nchMarQ, Emtee, Fifi Cooper, Saudi)
One of the flagship songs on not just Miss Pru’s but Ambitiouz Entertainment’s catalogue, ‘Ameni’ features a lineup that consisted of icons in the making. ‘Ameni’ is a monumental posse cut with different rapping styles and a solid hook by Sjava. Everyone on this song has since left AE to forge their own paths, which makes the song a valuable time capsule.
