@Static_Flo Tells Her Story In Her New EP ‘Iphupha’

By @SeptemberEleven on 11/09/2022 in Projects You Should Hear

Eastern Cape rapper Static Flo just dropped her EP ‘Iphupha’. The project comes a few months since she relocated to joburg a few months ago. ‘Iphupha’ offers an opportunity to know who Static Flo is as a rapper and human being as she raps honestly about her personal life and career. She sets the mood with the title track where she also sings the hook.

‘Fly with me’ is a song dedicated to her significant other, highlighting the challenges they’ve overcome and how far they are yet to go. In the same song, she does a back and forth with Bencco who also produced most of the project. He also appears on ‘I see the light’ which also features PdotO. She flexes on ‘Suka’, rapping in the hook: “Bathi bantswempi, ha, bayaxoka, nobody better than me.”

‘Iphupha’ comes with a remix of her 2021 single ‘The Queen of the East’ which features a dope verse by EC rapper Normsick.

Static Flo touches on social issues on ‘Court of law’ where she raps, “What do you know about purchasing miracles on a Sunday? What do you know about the filthy congregation? Pastors in the day, fornicators in the night.”

In this project, Static Flo made sure to colour outside the boxes; known mostly for her hard raps over boom bap beats as heard on her debut EP, The Completion, released in 2020, on Iphupha she went for a more modern soundscape and made sure to go beyond rapping and showcase her vocal abilities.

The closing song ‘Mntaka mama’ has adult contemporary soul touches. In it, she sings dearly about her sister who paved the way for her as the first artist in her family.
