It has been over 33 Years since Brenda Fassie's 'Too Late For Mama' hit the airwaves and has since been a generational hit as it embraces the realities of African Mothers and the struggles they face when raising their kids. This though applies to all mothers as they put in so much of their time and effort to ensure their children are well fed even when they are not making much.
Black Coffee and the rest of Gallo team managed to create a compilation of their best hits from the past 33 years to remake with one of the best voices in Africa and amongst the chosen ones happened to be Botswana's very own 'Mpho Sebina'. I remember when I first heard the song, I was so stunned by her amazing vocal play and melodies as she re-created an experience from a musical and reality perspective. The single honestly touched my soul as it reminded me of all the joyful memories that I had along fellow children from my village without the understanding of the sacrifices our mothers were making and Grandmothers included just to make sure we have smiles on our faces and never lack a thing from basic needs.
It brought me joy and allowed me to appreciate life and family as a whole, mainly my mother as she has done so much to make sure I am where I am and that I flourish in all things that I do. She has made sure that I never complain about food even in times where money was scarce. She did her best and honestly it is for me to do the same for her. Show her some love and appreciation as well as simply doing the best for her on the day I fully succeed. She will lack nothing and I will ensure that. The lovely thing about mothers is the key principles they live by and by all means try to instil them in us is 'Prayer and Gratitude' and all they want for us is for us to be better people and never repeat the mistakes of the past.
This article isn't only a dedication to all mothers in the world but then also to Mpho Sebina for gracing us with the best rendition of the song. I will never forget the clean 'Black And White' visuals as they spoke more of our roots above everything. I am happy to have lived in the generation that gets to not only witness 'Brenda Fassie' before she passed on but also the opportunity to witness 'Mpho Sebina' in her element as she creates timeless music all the time.
Sending Love to the queen and looking forward to her next release this month.
