After 6 years, Slim BLVD’s “Phanda Mo” featuring Cassper Nyovest, Emtee and Tshego has reached 1 million views on YouTube.
2016 is often lauded as a great year for South African hip-hop. That year, Yanga Chief, Emtee and Tshego were considered newcomers, Cassper Nyovest had recently won a BET Award, and Slim BLVD struck gold with “Phanda Mo” featuring all three of them. When the record first came out, Okay Africa dubbed the record one of “The 30 Best Songs By South African Hip-Hop DJs” while Bella Naija described the video as “hard core”. It’s been six years since then and today, the music video has raked in 1 million views.
On reaching this milestone after so many years, Slim BLVD expresses, “It feels unreal especially because when the song came out, we did our PR run, we ran with the video, but I just didn’t expect a million views. The fact that people kept watching after all these years just speaks to how you have to believe in the music because if it resonates with people, you don’t need to do much; the people will do it for you if they love it.
It feels great to hit a million views, not a lot of people can say that. I’m just thankful to everybody that was involved, that watched the video, thankful to everybody that showed love.”
