R&B is a deceiving genre in the sense that it seems so easy to create. Get a trap soul beat, insert some cliche lines here and there and you're done, except... it isn't that simple.
AFRIKA's debut EP titled TORO, is the perfect example of someone making it look easy. The EP opens up with the beautifully intense and cinematic 'TORO'. It's the kind of song that gives you the 'feels'. Songs like Y? and TIME display her ability to explore common themes of love in an introspective way. AFRIKA managed to strike the balance between being emotive without coming off as overly emotional or cliche, like when she says "I can't really fuck with all of your lies. Your 10 000 hoes" on TIME or "I am your UFO, you hide me so well" on. the heartbreak song titled 'Y?'. I think that's the best thing about this EP and AFRIKA as an artist. There is a deep level of honesty that she carries in her music. She fully explores the complexity and often contrasting emotions that we go through as people trying to figure themselves out in the midst of falling in and out of love with ourselves.
