@_Kudzayi Drops His Highly Anticipated "From The Heart" EP

By @Lesiba on 01/28/2022 in Projects You Should Hear

Kudz' “From The Heart” EP explores the many layers of love and heartbreak through smooth R&B inspired basslines featuring harmonies from frequent collaborators like G.M.I Venus & Jvsn. The appropriately titled "The Intro" sets the mood with cinematic chords and synths to ease us into Ellie's heartfelt performance on "Be Okay". Ellie explores the complex range of emotions that one goes through when falling in and out of love on the hook, which sees her deliver smooth melodic vocals over laid back basslines that strike the balance between classic R&B and Trap Soul. The EP seamlessly transitions into "Best Friend" which sees Kudz delve deeper into the Trap Soul subgenre, with G.M.I. Venus & Jvsn lacing infectious melodies and harmonies that pull on the hearts strings. The EP takes a downtempo detour on the Tamson Day & Jvsn assisted track "With You". Tamson Day paints a poetic picture of love on top of warm production that carries hues of Jazz with elements like keys taking centre stage, and Jvsn provided the finishing touches to the emotive song with his vocal performance at the tail-end of "With You". Tyree Twill's soft-spoken performance on "The Interlude" draws a close to the chapter of the EP that explores love and heartbreak through R&B. The percussion-heavy production serves as the palette cleanser before the EP switches gears into a sound that triggers feelings of nostalgia with a sound reminiscent of South African legends past. "Kuzolunga" (which translates to ‘things will come right’ in isiZulu) is the first of two songs that showcase Kudz' versatility as a producer, with him drawing inspiration from the warm and unique soundscapes that can only be found at home. Potha Canklin delivers a heartwarming message of perseverance through traditional African melodies and harmonies before the EP draws to a close, on the outro of the album titled "Ungaphela Mandla"(which translates to don't lose hope/faith in isiZulu). The song carries a rhythm and tempo that envokes feelings of courage in the face of adversity and ties together the meaning behind "From The Heart".
