@walterautotune 'AMIS' Project Is The Beginning of Something Special

By @Lesiba on 12/10/2021 in Projects You Should Hear

Waltercanautotune is someone that is undeniably one of our favourite up and coming artists at Slikouronlife right now and he recently released his project titled AMIS.

Having listened to songs like 'Affection' and 'Strange', I knew to expect an album with a lot of trap influence. I really enjoy Walter's interpretation of the sub-genre and he has a clear ear for melodies and flows, which are the bread and butter of trap. If you can get those things right then you have already won half of the battle. Songs like 'Losses' and 'Affection' are near impossible not to mumble along to because of how catchy Walter's flows are.

My only gripe with trap music is how it can sometimes feel void of creativity with most artists producing almost identical songs and I appreciate the fact that at no point in listening to this project do I ever feel that way. I can always feel Walter's personality in the music and I can differentiate him from other artists in the country. Again, there aren't a lot of rules when it comes to this sort of music, so you would expect artists to push the limits of their creativity. I say this because as much as I enjoy Walter's usual sound like 'Commes Des Garcons', there are songs on this album that see him explore different sounds that hint at the direction he can grow into as an artist along with the rest of the AMIS collective as a whole.

'Oddessy' and 'Can't Stop You(Interlude)' both have a unique hue that I struggle to describe but it is a weird mix of Hip Hop and Neo R&B that one would be hard-pressed to find from other artists in the country. While those songs exist on the downtempo end of the spectrum, something like 'Good Girls' has an infectious jiggy feel with serious single quality.

When I listen to an album, it usually takes some time for me to settle on what I feel an artist does best, especially with an artist as talented as Walter because every pocket of sound touches me in a different way depending on my mood. With that being said, 'Bad For Me' came as a surprising favourite. It feels like a chaotic mesh of sounds and you're never quite sure which way the song is going. The song feels like it has a delicate balance that could go off the rails if everything isn't perfect. I don't think I've heard that sort of cadence and lyrical approach on production with a fusion of a variety of sounds and that's why I would say it's my favourite song on the album... well, for now at least. I am beyond impressed with Walter and the AMIS collective and listening to their music gives me the same feeling I had when I first started listening to South African artists on SoundCloud. I feel like I am getting to witness the genesis of something special.
