I didn't grow up in a household that had music playing nor were my parents all that interested in music. I also wasn't allowed to express myself and that spilled over to the music I listened to, so when I come across an artist that I can listen to with my mother, I cherish it. Today, I woke up and I made my mom listen to Muneyi's 'Makhulu' and it became the soundtrack for the morning. Neither of us knew what Muneyi was saying but we didn't care. 'Makhulu' is so beautifully composed that you don't need to know what is being said. Muneyi is deliberate in almost every aspect of his execution and you can feel the emotion he's conveying in the music. 'Makhulu' feels spiritual and his music brings me to a place of clarity because of how pure it sounds. Makhulu is the therapy that I knew I needed but didn't know where to find. A beautiful body of work indeed. Stream 'Makhulu' below.
