4 Essential Tips For Artists On @SpotifySA

By @Lesiba on 09/21/2021 in Article

In our continued effort to provide information that can empower our audience, I decided to take a look at Spotify's services for artists and found a few tips on how to grow on the platform.

Pitch Your Music For Playlisting

Spotify has two main categories of playlists namely: editorial and personalised playlists. You can identify editorial playlists by the Spotify logo in the top left corner and personalised playlists are different for each user. So your release radar may not be the same as someone else's release radar. Below is a full list of personalised playlists:

  • Discover Weekly
  • Release Radar
  • Daily Mix
  • On Repeat
  • Repeat Rewind

I love how transparent this service is from Spotify because there is so much confusion around how to get your music onto editorial playlists. You will need to have a 'Spotify For Artists' profile in order to pitch your music for playlisting. You should note that you can't pitch a song if you are the featured artist nor can you pitch compilations. Spotify will notify you via email if your song has been playlisted. Get People To Follow You On Spotify

Spotify has a 'follow' function which separates it from other platforms. You want people to follow you because Spotify will notify your followers when you release new music. The Spotify algorithm also takes artists following into account when it comes to creating personalised playlists.

Lookout For Spotify Greenroom

Spotify Greenroom is a live audio platform like Twitter Spaces or Clubhouse. It's still in its early stages and may not be available for everyone but I think it would be a cool way for artists to connect with their audience on a music platform.

Make Your Music Available For Pre-Save

When a user pre-saves your music, it automatically adds your music to the users' library. It also gives users the option to add your music to their own playlist once the song has been released. With new music being released almost every Friday, it's a good idea to have your music available for pre-save because people might forget that you released music. This feature also allows you to build an email list that you can use for future promotions.
