@zenayeskosana's 'Lost in the sauce' isn't what you think

A Hip Hop commentator who goes by Mothusi recommended Zenaye Skosana's 'without you in sight' to me because he knew about my love for 'instrumental' music and he was right. Only after listening to 'without you in sight' about 10 times on repeat did I listen to the full EP and was happy to find that the entire EP is a wonderful listen. I love the title 'Lost in the sauce' because it's a phrase that is synonymous with this generation. It's like she is telling us what it's like to be a lover today. The EP opens with the song 'spent' which sees her explain the emotional cost of being in love. Often times when we lose out on love, the first thoughts that come to mind are the material things we have lost like perhaps the money you spent on a birthday gift but the truth is, you can always make money back. When she sings "I spent my love energy on you" it resonated with me on a deeper level because you can't get the energy or love that you 'spend' on a person back.

I love how she went about the song 'without you in sight'. The production of the song is very instrumental and has this warm feeling. I think it's impossible to not feel that way when you hear 'happy' instruments like marimbas but 'without you in sight' is actually a song about heartbreak. I think it's a mark of a great artist being able to do something like that because it shows how the listener gets carried away by how the song sounds but if you dig deeper you find out the song has a deeper meaning.

The EP gets progressively slower with 'it's a wee thing' and 'be careful'. The former has a sort of 'airy' trap soul feel but I really love what she did on the latter, 'be careful'. She seems like she is really at home on that sort of soulful production. Her songwriting impressed me on the song because she managed to talk about a well-explored topic without leaning on any cliche lines. She does the same sort of thing on the song 'lost in the sauce' when she sings "I don't want to get lost in the sauce of your love". I don't think I've heard anyone speak about love in 'the same language' as me. It makes the music feel more genuine and current. She created the song with the intention of telling her story in her way and not with the intention to create a broadly relatable R&B song.

I don't mind when artists want to incorporate aspects of other genres but I feel like Zenaye did it the right way with 'always'. The song is balanced in the sense that she was able to incorporate elements of afrobeat without losing herself in making an afrobeat song.

Zenaye Skosana is an amazing artist. She has great songwriting ability and she has her own unique blend of R&B. I think she executed a different sound on every song whilst still being able to make the EP feel cohesive. I'm trying to think of an artist who makes music similar to 'Lost in the sauce' and I'm struggling. She truly is a unique talent. Stream 'Lost in the sauce' below.
