R&B Radar - 5 Projects You Should Listen To

By @Lesiba on 08/05/2021 in Projects You Should Hear

As much as I would love to put everyone I listen to on this list, I challenged myself to stick to 5 projects that I think are really stand out from the first half of the year.  These projects are in no particular order.

Mo$hpit Cindy - 21st Centruy Luv

I can't tell you enough about how much I love Mo$hpit Cindy's music. It's a mix of R&B, Hip Hop and Trap Soul. Her stand out trait is the clarity in which she delivers her lyrics. In an era where rappers and singers are mumbling their way through songs, Mo$hpit Cindy's music feels like a breath of fresh air.

Fentse - Get It Together.

I don't think she likes it when I call her this but I think 'lil lorde' is an appropriate way to describe her sound and by no means is she a copy and paste. Fentse's music harbours more on the alternative R&B side of the spectrum and she delivers a sonic experience that most listeners have difficulty digesting on their first listen, myself included, but once you allow yourself to enter her world on her terms, you'll see that this is easily one of the most unique and creative R&B artists in the country.

Ipeleng - pHantom

It was interesting to see the direction that Ipeleng took with pHantom. When I heard the single, 'near you', I was a bit surprised because I didn't really see her as a soul artist but after listening to pHantom, I'm not mad at it. pHantom is a very connected EP, in the sense that the songs flow into each other. It's a really beautiful piece of work and I feel it should be appreciated a bit more than what it was. This EP was a big leap forward in all aspects from her debut, 'Unsolicited'.

Adrienne Foo and Phiwo - NMBRS

This is my official shower track and it's with good reason. Adrienne Foo and Phiwo are the singer duo that I didn't know I needed in life. My favourite song on this EP changes regularly depending on my mood. They're both incredibly talented singers with the chemistry to create songs that make you feel a broad range of emotions in 11 minutes. Special.

Monelle - In Loathing Memory

I have to shout out the best kept secret podcast for putting me onto Monelle. Her music is a smooth blend of R&B and poetry. Her music has the same sort of quality as Lauryn Hill's 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' and before you say it... no, I'm not 'gassing' her. She has a poetic flow that differentiates her from other R&B artists in the country. I think 'In Loathing Memory' is one of the most 'complete' pieces of work I've heard in a while.
