I really have no idea where Benzo came from but she's quickly established herself as one of the hottest up and coming rappers on the scene. If you disagree with me please listen to Kumkanikazi and then come back. Benzo gifted the 'benzonites' with 2 singles in 'All Hail iKumkanikazi' and 'Cigarettes'. The former, 'All Hail iKumkanikazi', is what we have come to expect from Benzo. She has a weird contrast to her music that makes it pretty unique. Her cadence is laid back and packed with bars but the production has a lot of energy. She floats on top of her songs and she has the confidence of a seasoned rapper saying things like "I did it all under a year, look at my eyes and we cheers, this album it brought me to tears, my name it be buzzing from here to there, I walk in the mall and they stare, the vision is clear".
'Cigarettes' is something that we haven't heard from Benzo at all. It took me by surprise but I think I might enjoy 'R&B Benzo' more than I do her rapping, which is scary considering how much I enjoy her rapping. I say this because her singing offers her the opportunity to make her music more emotive and I was pleasantly surprised by her vocal delivery. I think her being such a great rapper will serve as an advantage because she can explore a variety of flows and deliveries as R&B production tends to give artists more room to play around with. When she sang "these cigarettes, gotta get my life in check, but still i light it up, i light it with a blunt, wrote this verse having started with a blunt", I really felt it because the relationship a smoker has with cigarettes can be just as tumultuous as a relationship with another person. These 2 singles have gotten me really excited for Benzo's upcoming album. It seems that she just might be the full package. And one more thing... may her name be known like the street Vilakazi.
