Which South African Rapper Deserves A Street To Be Named After Them?

By @Nokulunga_Maqubela on 06/11/2019 in Article

It is either in identification or honour where the importance of a name lies. Although its importance can be easily lost in just a landmark and a geographical marking aiding the lost, street names too form a significance in the society. Otherwise they wouldn't be named after people.

Giving character and life to the space they are placed at, street names are historical markers for a city. Inspired by either politics, culture, or ideologies they provide a common reference or language for the people residing that particular area. In South Africa, revolutionaries and politicians form a major part in the street names. Although the country has undergone changing the names, they have still remained political. Meanwhile in New York, they have recently named the street Biggie grew up on after him. Renamed from Brooklyn Street to Christopher "Notorious B.I.G" Wallace Way, giving life to "hip hop started in the streets." Bringing it back home, if we had to rename certain streets, which South African hip hop contributors would you name the streets after? Drop your comments on the box below.
